If you’re a small business owner trying to market your business today, it can feel like you’re constantly behind.
There’s always something new you should be doing. Post on social media every day. Start a newsletter. Optimize for AI search. Improve your website. Launch ads. Host an event. Create videos. Build a lead magnet.
The list never seems to end.
And the truth is… most small businesses don’t fail at marketing because they aren’t trying hard enough. They fail because they try to do too many things at once. When everything feels urgent, nothing gets done well.
But marketing doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. There’s a much simpler approach. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, focus on one new marketing idea each month (or one per quarter, whatever works for your workload). That’s it. Just one.
Give yourself the space to learn it, test it, and get comfortable with it before adding something new. Here is a sample 5-month plan to get you started:
Month 1: Social Media
Maybe this month you decide to focus on improving your social media presence. You don’t need to master every platform. Just choose one and commit to posting consistently for a few weeks. Learn what resonates with your audience and build the habit.
Month 2: AI & LLM Optimization
Next month, explore how AI tools or large language models can help your business—whether that’s improving your website content, answering customer questions faster, or optimizing your business information so AI search engines can better understand your brand.
Month 3: Start a Newsletter
Email is still one of the most powerful marketing tools available. You don’t need a complicated strategy to start. Just commit to sending something simple and helpful to your customers each month.
Month 4: Website Cleanup
Take a month to review your website. Are your services clear? Are your contact options easy to find? Is your messaging simple and customer-focused?
Month 5: Host an Event or Promotion
Maybe this is the month you host a customer appreciation event, a workshop, or a special promotion to bring people through the door.
The key is not stacking all of these in the same month.
Marketing works best when it’s consistent and sustainable. When you give each effort the attention it deserves, you’ll build momentum instead of burnout. Over time, these small improvements stack up. And before you know it, you’ve built a well-rounded marketing system—one step at a time.
Good marketing isn’t about chasing every new tactic—it’s about building habits that work for your business.
